Let's Talk... Ads

Sunday, 18 October 2015

I made a quick announcement earlier this month. Hidden and quick since it mainly focused on Fright Night. In that post, I said I would further elaborate on it later. To talk about the most taboo topic for bloggers. The dreaded, the terror, the horror. More frightening than all of the SFX looks found on the internet.

Ads.

Someone's running away with fingers in their ears.

The decision to incorporate advertisement and sponsorship into Hey Bash was conscious and deliberate. It’s a step in this spiral staircase.

Hey Bash is a personal blog first, where I can write and post how I please. Perhaps that's why I declined generous offers that provided free clothes, or sponsored posts. It would admit that Hey Bash would be growing and evolving into something else. It would become a job. It took a while for me to accept this, and my objectives changed.

I decided to start blogging ‘properly’ in early February. Joining the community and calling myself a blogger was a huge step forward. I was happy when bloggers enjoyed my posts. I was even happier when companies emailed me to work with them. Fear got the best me though, so I declined. I still decline most that come my way.

The thought of working as blogger intrigued me though. It would intrigued any broke teenager. And like any broke teenager would, I turned to my parents. Both entrepreneurs and bosses in their own field. They agreed improvements were essential first then integrate through phrases. Get a domain for 20 bucks, a nice header and theme, and then try out as a business.

I waited for a good time to embrace this business side of blogging. Once I turned eighteen, I organized my jumbled thoughts and decided to start in October. There were limitations I had to resolve. Particular problems with PayPal and how to incorporate advertising seamlessly.

That said, this is the package plan I came up with!

SOCIAL COMMOTION

No blog action, just promotion!

You will receive:

  • 1 Instagram photo posted on @bashhharry with links to your brand/blog
  • 3 Shout-Outs on Twitter

THAT PERFECT POST
600 word article

For businesses wishing to promote their products or bloggers endorsing themselves. It includes an in-post feature and social shares.

You will receive:
  •  A detailed 600 word post about your business/blog. This post will be shared on Bloglovin, Twitter and Google+.
  • 3 Shout-Outs on Twitter, promoting your brand/blog
  • Customized photos that you have the right to use (if products provided)
  • 1 Instagram photo with links to your website/account (if applicable)

BABY BUTTON
150 x 150

For advertisers who want to gain exposure on a budget. The most affordable way to promote your brand/blog!

You will receive:
  • A 150px x 150px banner will be shown under the ‘Sponsors’ header. Shuffled and rotated accordingly to maximise visibility.
  • A mention and 140 character description about your blog/brand on the 'Meet the Sponsors' post at the end of the month. This post will be shared on Bloglovin, Twitter and Google+
  • 1 Shout Out on Twitter, promoting your brand/blog

BIG BEAUTIFUL BANNER
300 x 250

Featured advertisers will have prominent space as the main sponsors of Hey Bash.

You will receive:
  • Your 300px x 250px banner will be shown in the right-hand sidebar under the ‘Friends’ header. Rotated to maximise visibility
  • Detailed 100 word piece about your brand/blog on the 'Meet The Sponsors' post of the month. This post will be shared on Bloglovin, Twitter and  Google+
  • 3 Shout-Outs on Twitter, promoting your brand/blog

I think to myself this sounds reasonable but the voice in my head tells me I’m a terrible person who shouldn’t be blogging at all.

I still don’t know as I’m typing this post. But like everything in life, you attack head on and just pray you don’t get mauled. So please don’t maul me.

Since this is a beta test, I am still figuring things out. I am not disclosing the pricing here though. Just send me a quick email to provide you with not only the price, but detailed information and a media kit as well. More information is provided on my Advertise page right here!

So as a celebration, I have another announcement. For the whole month of November, the first FIVE to email for ANY package will be FREE. Whether you're a blogger or brand or even an alien. You are not exempt and alway welcomed.

What? Bash, that's crazy. I know but I am too.

All you have to do is email me at bashharry@heybash.com and we can get started talking!

So what do you think? Do you have any tips on how to do this? Seriously, I'd love to know!

  5. Oh thank you for this, I didn't know how to react when I got some sponsored posts offer. I actually declined 2 offers already because I feel like it wouldn't go on my blog. I have a little regret because I could bought some beauty products I could review on my blog with the money I could have earned from them but oh well. I did received some products to try though..so I'm pretty happy. :)

  8. This is such a helpful post! Ads are definitely okay. I don't understand being completely against them. There's nothing wrong with wanting your hobby to be your job. Again, great post!

  9. I have to say I felt the same way too because a blog is born out of passion but then as Amber pointed out, there's nothing wrong about making your passion a career. :)

  13. Great post! I used to do advertising through some website... I really can't remember which one it was, but it was very convenient to set up. I loved it, but then I started just receiving e-mails from companies for sponsorship and decided that website wasn't necessary anymore.

  23. I'm still at that stage where I'm afraid that monetizing my blog will turn it from a hobby into work. Well, I'm not really afraid, just wary. I don't think I will ever monetize my blog, because I'd personally rather put my efforts elsewhere, but I'm glad that you're taking this step! Making money while blogging could actually enhance content and let you better focus on your creative endeavors now that you don't have to worry about putting your energy into something else to make money :) -Audrey | Brunch at Audrey's

  24. I don't know why some frown on bloggers monetizing their blog, it's like a job, a source of income so why not right? I have not done it with my blog because I want it to remain as a hobby instead of a full time commitment that would stress the living daylight out of me and I just don't have the time to take it full-time. Good on you for taking this step, well done!

  34. I think it's really awesome that you are doing this Bash and opening it up to turn it into a business. A lot of people complain about ads and all that stuff how bloggers are all ads now but I get it... if you would like to have it as a job you have to make money some how, what I don't get and I think where a lot of bloggers go wrong is when they're not authentic and saying yes to anything and everything. Your audience is going to pick that up if your doing something purely for money or freebies instead of that you genuinely love the product/company and are also gaining money and freebies out of it. I would love to turn my blog into a business but I'm still working on how I would like to do that and if the right people happen to also approach me. Why you're doing what you're doing, authenticity and your readers should always come first and if business opportunities and money making slot in with that it's a go for it situation. You have a sold passion, clear talent and a level head Bash so I think you are on the right track.

  35. The business side of blogging is always a tough one- you have to really find your morals and what your blog stands for before you give in to that side of blogging. I think you have a beautiful plan and executing it so well, can't wait to see what more is in the future for Hey Bash!

  38. Great post! I completely understand how you feel as most new bloggers or even some weed-known bloggers feel about ads. No one wants to change the scope of their blog but everyone needs to grow so sometimes change is good - just don't change too much. (I kinda feel like I am talking to myself as I write this - maybe I am, too.) This was definitely helpful and so I wouldn't maul you my hands are away from the computer keys, right...NOW! just kidding!

  39. Ads aren't a bad thing at all, as long as you're being genuine about it! I'm always happy to accept offers for companies, but I always give them a heads up that it'll take a few weeks for me to properly get a feel of their product before I promote it. And if I have a bad reaction, I'll let them know if they still want me to share my thoughts since they are sending products out in hopes for a positive review. Don't stress about it too much!
