The Instagram Dilemma

Tuesday, 21 April 2015

I need to vent today. Please let me vent.

Instagram is problematic even though it shouldn't be.  I should focus on other problems like what should I study, or what books to read, or what shoes to buy. Compelling difficulties of daily life. But Instagram has been aggravating me for months now and not for the reason that it should.

Instagram profiles. Yes, shoot me in the face for having such a distraught dilemma that I must make a post about it.

I have two Instagram accounts, heybash and bashharry. heybash is my private account I've had since the end of 2012 and bashharry, my public makeup account that I started last year. heybash was where I would post personal pictures of my life. bashharry was suppose to my makeup account where I promote my blog, showed makeup and become a platform.

Though in theory, it could've been helpful to separate work from life. As time progressed, I realized how similar both had become and how tedious it was. I don't post personal photos often. The last photo was of the Flower Child look taken over two weeks ago (using my camera which annihilates the point of a personal photo). Nor do I post makeup looks often. Studies come first and I don't have the capacity to wear makeup every week. So now, I'm left with two accounts, near identical that I have no idea what to do with.

A silly, stupid predicament that I'm stuck in. I don't know if I should just remove my private account, but has  my friends' account. Make it public instead but leave the other one irrelevant. Figure out a compromise else I'll rip out all my hair out.

Or maybe this is just an excuse for my subconscious mind to think of something else other than my upcoming exams.

So do you have any tips? Helpful thoughts on the matter? Or perhaps I'm just thinking too much into it. I tend to do that.

  1. Wow you rock some gorgeous looks. Love how you experiment with it. You can always put your personal account on hold and just use it very occasionally :)

  2. I think just forget about them for a while and do what feels right. I had two Facebook accounts one time, and I know what you mean that they merge into one eventually, and it's a pain in the ass, so I deleted one. It's just less to worry about. So I'd pick one to keep and get rid of the other. But that could be my OCD and wanting all my stuff in one place talking, so whatever feels good to you, Bash :)

  3. I had a friend who made a separate personal account and ended up going back to it just because it was too tedious. I say just follow your friends on your makeup one and post your makeup and personal!

  4. i'm the same, my studying should come first, but i always find something else to occupy myself! you could always hold one of the accounts for a while, pop it on private, then ome back to it when you have more time :) xxxx

  5. I have the same dilemma. I just upload a few times a week on my makeup account, and once in a while on my personal account.

  6. Why don't you just pick one to focus on developing?

  7. Focusing on one for a little while may be the best choice til you can really move forward and have more time to know what you want to do. I had a specifically for the blog insta for a few weeks, but just couldn't handle it ahaha.

  8. I rarely post on my personal account and that is why I let it go. The social ones just became active and personal at the same time. Less work. Great photos by the way.

  9. Lol I wouldn't say shoes shopping is a compelling difficulty of daily life but I do agree with you that Instagram can be challenging at times. Especially when your trying to get the perfect alignment of pictures in your gallery. You know I actually thought of having two Instagram accounts but it's more work that it seems and I have realized that people are nosy and usually want to have a peek into you personal life. Hence I recommend deleting the account with the least number of followers and then re-following your friends.

  10. Hmm, I've never been a huge fan of two accounts as it's just too tedious to keep up with both so I have high respect for anyone who can do it. Maybe request your friends to add your public profile? It's easier to transfer and merge it into one, I think.

  11. I think you should keep your make up profile since you are promoting your make up skills. You can always follow your friends with that account too. I'm not on instagram yet but if I do will definitely follow you! Hope you choose what's best for you!

  12. I think you should keep both! I have two accounts, and even though I find myself posting more on the blog account more than my personal account, it is nice to have separate "spaces" for my pictures :) I do sympathize with your dilemma!

  14. I know the problem with multiple accounts on social media. Went through that when I wanted to create a Professional Page on Facebook and not to lose all my friends contacts on my regular account. It was a bit of a hassle! I would recommend concentrate more on your business account and, if you don't want to delete your other account, you may "hide" it and keep for friends only. Good luck! ;-)

  16. I think that you should keep both. One day, people might not even use instagram anymore! Also, when you think about growing up, you're not going to want all of those people that you used to know on your account. Just a thought :)

  18. Since the root of your dilemma seems to be managing to very similar accounts to two different audiences, the easiest way would be to do a profile transfer! Inform your followers that you will be moving to another account (it's your choice to decide which, but I would say to move from your personal to your makeup) in a set amount of time! You don't need to delete the other account; just leave it private, leave a little note saying you've transferred and ta-da!

  19. Your photographs are beautiful. I've always toyed with the idea of making a second account for my blog, but I feel like I'd be in the same predicament. I know I'd end up neglecting one for the other.

  20. I do have 2 instagram accounts two. The other one os for my blog and drawings and the other one is solely for my travels. That said, I post some travel pics too on my other instagram account. So my advice, whatever you think is much more convenient for you, do it. If you decided to delete 1 account, choose the one with least followers :)

  22. I had to seperate accounts too, but in the end I closed down my personal account and started posting in my "blog" account everything from my posts to everyday moments. In my opinion it would be easier for you to have one of them

  25. I have some blogger friends who had personal accounts and then accounts specifically for blog stuff and promotion, most of them ended up ditching the personal account as they were hardly posting on there. If you have facebook you could just use that for personal photos and keep your makeup profile as Instagram is much better for that? I hope you work it out eventually :)

  26. i actually faced this early this year...ended up deleting all of my accounts. for the simple reason that i lead a very public life with the blog and needed to keep a part of me private. so i kept my facebook profile private which made more sense for me coz everyone is there including immediate family, old friends, etc. my blog, instagram, facebook page and twitter are all public. i never minded starting all over again even if it took me years to establish everything coz i believe in being able to start again, even better this time around :) whatever your choice, i wish you well and no worries...hehe :) good luck!!

  30. I totally agree with you on how frustrating instagram can be when it comes to handling multiple accounts. I just deleted my accounts and I plan to make a brand new one. And I TOTALLY get procrastination with exams. I HATE studying for my exams. 31. I only have one because I decided to use my personal one, but it's quite annoying sometimes because I know that my family and friends must be fed up with my constant makeup/beauty/fashion pics. Can't really change now so I don't know what to suggest to you!

  33. I have one account because like you, I find it too tedious and for me a lot of my blog relates closely to my personal one so it made sense for me.
The only thing negative thing I find about this is that I follow so many people (friends, bloggers, influencers)

  34. If it's causing you stress, I say just delete one of them so it's easier to manage. Since they're near identical, it's not so bad whichever one you pick! So I guess just pick the one with least followers to delete :P

  35. I understand the dilemma. I have been AWOL for weeks from Instagram. I only posted one or two pics a day, but it became more than what I could do--just too many other "to do's" in my work life right now. Maybe in time, I'll get back on Instagram. T. http://tickledpinkwoman.blogspot.com

  36. Totally agree. I have tried to keep up with to IG accounts once before but it was so annoying. They definitely need a new app to allow easy access to more than one account!

  37. It must be tricky having two accounts! :)

Why don't you keep your private one private, and tell all your friends to follow you on the public one as well? That way you have one you can update - the public one - and you can go back to using the private one later if you want :)

I post on instagram a lot - sometimes multiple times a day! I think it's fun :) But if it isn't fun, just tedious for you, then maybe you shouldn't use either account and just take a break from it for a while? No point doing something if it's not fun :)

  39. I have the exact same thought as you--two accounts. One private and one public for the blog. Ever since I created my blog account I rarely check my personal Instagram. I still have it though since it's linked to my Facebook, but I understand exactly where you're coming from. If it's stressful and not fun though take a step back. Or maybe try to be more contrasting in your content for each account so you don't run the risk of double posting and making it boring? :)

  40. Two Instagram accounts can be a looooooot of work. I say leave it be for now. Concentrate on your studies because you can figure out what to do with them later anyway. They'll wait.
